KD8000 Portable Heater
By Deb
This product was delivered on time, no broken or missing parts and packaged well. Instructions were clear and product was easy to put together. Product produces a good amount of heat and in my opinion does use less electricity. I do not feel that product is able to heat the area claimed in the advertisement. All in all I am pleased with the purchase.

Perhaps 600 insulated square feet
By hardknocka
I have a 200 square foot poorly insulated space (its a solarium addition ie three walls of double paned glass). I figured with the claims of being able to heat 600 sq feet this unit would more than compensate for all the windows. NOPE had to return it. I purchased four (ugly) baseboard units and that did the trick.

Oh Boy: Another Crappy Yet Expensive Electric Space Heater
By trapeze
There is most obviously a lot of money to be made off of people who are just convinced that you always get what you pay for... in this case, four hundred bucks just HAS to result in amazing comfort at mere pennies a day to operate. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news... well, no, that's not exactly correct... I actually get a kick out of debunking these stupid things... but, this heater is not magical. There isn't a little leprechaun or genie inside of it that spits out heat for nothing. And yet, this is what the seller would have you believe. Let's take a look at their product description line by line:

"The Solar Comfort has lower operating and maintenance costs." Compared to what? This is a throwaway line. Since there is no qualifying statement it is meaningless. Calling it "Solar" is stupid too, by the way.

"There is only one moving part, the fan motor, and is equipped with quality trouble free controls." They toss this out there as if this is a big deal. It isn't. Most electric space heaters have one moving part: Of course it's the fan. Some electric space heaters have zero moving parts. Does that make them better than this one? And most electric space heaters have the same type of controls that this one does. Whoop dee doo.

"There are no burners to rust, corrode or adjust; no pilot light to waste energy." This is really comparing apples to oranges. It's true. There are no burners or pilot lights with this unit. But it isn't going to heat your whole house like a traditional furnace does, either. As a side note: Furnace and boiler manufacturers quit using pilot lights a couple of decades back.

"Safe, clean, long-life infrared lamps provide the heat energy and are replaced easily and inexpensively. (Average lamp life is 5000+ hours or approximately 3-5 years)." They say this like it's an advantage or something. Light bulbs burn out. In my book that's a nuisance. The heating elements in traditional (and vastly cheaper) electric space heaters almost never burn out. Light bulb life is drastically reduced by vibration and since this heater is portable (and has "one moving part"), the notion that you are going to get 5000+ hours per bulb is ridiculous.

"The Solar Comfort is constructed of lifetime metals, copper, galvanized steel and aluminum." Again, big deal... so is just about anything else out there. I mean, seriously, what else are you going to construct a heater out of? Tissue paper?

"The Solar Comfort provides even heat distribution and warmer floors. The Solar Comfort thermostatically controls, circulates and recycles heated air at the floor for maximum use and comfort. The floor to ceiling temperature differential is minor." This is utter nonsense and implies that it defies the laws of physics. Warm air rises. Cool air settles to the floor. I guess if you left the dinky little fan on you might get a tiny bit less temperature deviation between floor and ceiling but you sacrifice electricity (to drive the fan) to get that done.

"Solar Comfort zone heating does not remove humidity from the air, it actually helps to maintain humidity levels. Water does not readily condense on windows as with conventional systems. Even heating and humidity provide more comfort at lower heat settings with less static electricity." Total BS. I mean it: These are pure lies. No heater can remove humidity from the air. Winter air is drier than summer air and that's just a fact of life on planet Earth. Dehumidification can only be accomplished by chilling air below its dew point. You see this when water forms on the outside of a glass of ice water. It's why you use coasters. Heating air NEVER lowers humidity. Oh yeah, the only type of heater that could possibly cause condensation on windows would be a "ventless" gas heater. That's because one of the products of combustion (with any fossil fuel) is water vapor. Most gas (or oil) fired heating appliances are vented. This means that all of the combustion gases (including water vapor) are vented to the outdoors. Static electricity is a function of lower humidity levels that, as mentioned, are just part of winter weather. The Solar Comfort space heater has ZERO effect on humidity. It can't do anything else.

"As the Solar Comfort operates, you will notice that its heating ability does not depend on a high-speed flow of air. Instead, its gentle airflow promotes more effective heat mixing action and air stability at the floor. Soft heat." First of all, there is no such thing as "soft heat." When marketing people make up crap like this it's because they think you are stupid and will swallow anything they feed you. As for the rest of it: No, its heating ability has zero to do with air flow. The same amount of heat is produced regardless of air speed. They do, however, have to drive the air very slowly because so little heat is being produced. If they drove the air faster it would seem cooler (even though the same heat is there) and that's not a very good feature. So they drive the air very slowly so that the dinky heat output feels warm.

"The Solar Comfort does not burn, dry out or otherwise pollute the air with impurities. This protects the humidity level and air quality important to health and breathing comfort." Other than the aforementioned "ventless" gas heaters, NO heater pollutes the air with impurities. And NO heater burns air. You can't. Air isn't a fuel. It's an oxidizer which means that it is needed for fuels to burn. But you can't burn air. It simply isn't possible. And again, as previously mentioned, you can't affect humidity levels with heat.

So that's it. Those are their "selling points." Pretty impressive BS, right?

Here's the deal: This heater isn't any better at heating a space than any other (significantly cheaper) electric space heater. You get to heat one room in your house with this thing. That's it: One room. So in order to get the so-called savings you have to live like a peasant in some third world people's paradise and let the rest of your house freeze. This is the United States of America! If you have to live like that to save a few bucks on utilities then maybe you have more house than you can afford. And if you want to shell out several hundred bucks for a 1500 watt heater well, that's your business. Just don't say you weren't warned.
